This course is not a substitute for MATH 2413, Calculus I. For example, in business calculus you will see ideas like marginal analysis where you use tools like derivatives, cost functions, and revenue functions to really understand a business situation. It is rare that this would be covered directly in other calculus courses. Instead, students in a calc 1 class will see the occasional application problem but it might relate to a variety of applications like physics or engineering.

The course covers one semester of Business Calculus for college students and assumes students have had College Algebra. This is a calculus course covering limits, continuity, differentiation, and integration with emphasis on business applications. There is some mathematical theory; but, in general, topics are approached from an intuitive and applied point of view. A minimum grade of “C” is required if used to meet Gordon Rule requirements for general education.

Six units of credit are given if both MATH 135 and MATH 150A are taken. This course provides an introduction to applied concepts in Calculus that are relevant to the managerial, life, and social sciences. Students should have a firm grasp of the concept of functions to succeed in this course. Business Calculus by Dale Hoffman, Shana Calloway, and David Lippman is a derivative work based on Dale Hoffman’s Contemporary Calculus.

The classes are self-paced; however, a teacher is attached to each course who holds at least a master’s degree in their field of study .
