Why Storage Doesn't Need to Look Utilitarian
Useful and practical yet devoid of any shred of style or delight. In all honesty, many storage solutions are utilitarian – functional, yet boring. Some storage solutions are all the same so, no matter where you see it, it looks the same. Bring on a clean sheet of paper and instil imagination and design into the look...
The time has come for storage to break out of this utilitarian landscape because, to put it simply, just because something is functional, doesn’t mean it has to be boring, ugly and hidden.
Upcycling is the skill and art of repurposing an item so that it carries on being useful. Quite often, upcycling involves using more than one item and fusing them together.
Many people are turning to upcycling furniture as a way of adding stylish storage solutions to their home but doing it on a budget.
Larger pieces of furniture can be bought for very little – in some cases, you can find them for free, especially on various social sites in which the only real cost is you moving it back home – and can be modified and decorated for very little too.
For example, for a sideboard in the lounge, opt for a large item with plenty of drawer and cupboard space. Sand down the item, ensuring that all traces of varnish, paint or stain has been removed. Treat with a primer to seal the wood, and then paint the top coat of paint using specialist furniture paint. These paints are chalk based, so you don’t get the high shine of gloss but a more effective paint cover than using ordinary emulsion.
Make storage solutions stand out
It may be a shoe rack hidden in the cupboard in the hallway but that doesn’t mean the item of furniture has to be hidden away.
In the past, utilitarian design has meant hiding things from view and although that may have been beneficial in the past, modern life is such that sometimes, ‘grab and go’ is the order of the day.
Frankly, if you need the piece of furniture where it is, then make it part of the landscape. We’ve taken a look around the social media sites and seen examples of painted furniture, with fairy lights and so on draped around it so that it actually looks like pretty in the space it occupies.
Things don’t have to be hidden away
We also liked the look of some examples of interiors in which people showcased their items. What’s wrong with the kid’s shoes being lined up on a shelf in the hall ready for the morning rush? We also liked the way that people created their own storage solutions.
