Utilise Under Stair Storage With These Simple Tips
Storage is often a problem. From not having enough space to store things, to not having appropriate means to keep things tidy and safe.
The hallway can be a narrow space and one that soon feels cluttered with coats and bags etc. There is a solution – under stair storage. But, this valuable space isn’t just for coats, bags, wellingtons and the vacuum. It can be so much more.
A shape space and shaped solutions
The first thing to bear in mind is that the under stairs storage space is ‘shaped’; in other words, it is triangular with a sloping slant as the stair runs up the wall at an angle. Head height can be limited and so when it comes to utilising under the stairs to its fullest potential, you need to have bespoke storage solutions.
And this is where we come in! Take a look at some of our ideas…
#1 Compartment heaven
There are all kinds of things we need to store in or close to the hallway. A bespoke and fitted compartment ‘bookcase’ type arrangement is a great addition. Create pockets and compartments for specific items and allocated specific slots to family members too.
For example, school shoes on the bottom shelf, bags in the next compartment, important ‘must-not-forget’ items on the next shelf and so on. Leave the shelving open or have some compartments with doors on so various things can be hidden from view.
And don’t forget to add lighting for easy to use under stair storage solutions.
You may also wish to add a stylish fitted sliding door system to hide the contents and still provide full access to the storage layout behind.
#2 Office space
Depending on the location of your staircase and the size of the hallway, you could take advantage of the under stairs as a place for a small home office.
Let’s face it, there are all kinds of pieces of paper and documents that are important but we don’t always get chance to put things away in their proper places! A small home office with a 'hideaway desk' and shelving under the stairs is the perfect solution in so many ways.
Utilise as much of the space as possible with bespoke pieces and use slimline wall mounted cupboards and shelves to increase the space available.
#3 Clever solutions
There are also some really clever solutions for bespoke storage under the stairs. Rather than just leaning your bike, why not opt for it to hang under the stairs? Depending on the size, you could fit two adult bikes, a perfect solution for those without garden shed space and so on.
What about the family's sports gear? An organised storage solution can neatly house the golf clubs, rackets, hiking gear etc., to provide everyone with easy access to their personal equipment.
