SHOWROOM OPENING TIMES
Interior Design: What's IN and What's OUT 2019
Wondering whether you need to update the look by ditching one thing but adding another? You need our definitive guide…
IN – Floral wallpaper and fabrics: a welcome return to the traditional look, you can go as traditional as you please.
OUT – Trellis or tribal patterns: busy and detailed, they added welcome va-va-voom but they’ve had their day. But hold on to them because everything comes back around.
IN – Rich colours: think royal blue, sage greens, mustard yellow and you have a fair idea of some of the colours coming our way. Used as accents colour against a white backdrop, they really glimmer and shine.
OUT – Grey: it was around for many seasons, a welcome colour change to the usual palette of cream and white. But it’s had its day.
IN – Statement backsplashes: if you are looking to give your kitchen a facelift, replace the backsplash with a patterned one and you are on to a winner.
OUT – Terrazzo tiles: slightly reminiscent of a school hall from the 1970s, terrazzo tiling creeps back into designer plans every now and then but it seems to fall out of fashion quickly.
IN – Sustainable materials and pieces: not so much a trend but a necessity in our ever-changing world. Waste is out and sustainability is in so consider material choices wisely.
OUT – Overly detailed pieces: turbulent times are upon us and it seems that designers are recognising this by removing overly detailed pieces and bringing calmer, familiar patterns to the home.
IN – Four-poster beds: austerity has had a dreadful impact across the board and this has left us seeking comfort. The four-poster bed must surely be one of the most familiar of silhouettes in the bedroom and thus, 2019 we see it once again become a staple of the boudoir.
OUT – Dreamcatchers and ‘fibre art’: anything that dangles on the wall that is not art needs to be recycled and repurposed.
IN – Layering patterns: titled ‘Boho with a twist’, there is a delightful fusion between boho patterns (think tie-dye) with traditional patterns, such as willow pattern. Keep colours complimentary and you’ll fly!
OUT – Plain simplicity: what is tipped as being the way to go in 2019 in terms of interior design trends is the mixing of styles rather than opting for one and producing a clipped finish to a room.
IN – Mixed metals: every room should have some kind of metallic finish to it but this year, you don’t have to make the tough choice of silver, brass or rose gold because you can use them all! But stick with two main metallics and a third as an accent.
OUT – Overdoing it with brass: the golden hues of brass are not out completely but overusing in a room is. Tone it down, using it sparsely and possibly with another metal as a contrast.
IN – Black in the bathroom: and the bolder and braver you are with this colour choice, the better, including a black wash basin and matte black walls. Dare you?
OUT – Feature walls: many of us enjoy a feature wall or two but it seems that same -coloured walls is the way forward.
