Getting the Best from Storage
From wardrobes to fitted cupboards in the bedroom, it can be easy to assume that items store themselves. And this means chaos in the wardrobe! Try these simple but effective ideas for keeping order on everything from shoes to ties…
Shoes behind rails
We tend to see rails as for hanging clothes and whilst this is an obvious and time-honoured solution, a rail fitted closely to the back or side of a wardrobe or cupboard also makes a great solution for slotting shoes behind. From flipflops to sandals and shoes, why not have a shoe rail in your wardrobe?
Order with baskets
Baskets, either the hard weaved or soft weaved varieties, are a relatively inexpensive solution to keeping order on shelves and not just in the wardrobe. Opt for baskets that are the same colour and finish but different sizes to create a cacophony of choice when it comes to storing everything from shoes to cosmetics, to socks and odd-bits-and-bobs too.
Add drawers or shelving unit IN the wardrobe
If you are not yet blessed with fitted wardrobes, you need to maximise the empty space in your current one (and others!). You can do this by buying inexpensive half height and narrow shelving unit for use either as shelving or opt for a drawer version instead. There are wooden options, as well as plastic drawer towers but the latter can be a little temperamental in terms sturdiness…
In the kitchen
The same is true in many kitchen cupboards too, with a mass of empty space that means it is wasted. There are all kinds of potential solutions but one of the best is the racked shelving systems that are now commonplace. From adding a handy extra small shelf for tins and packets in the cupboard to corner shelving perfect for bowls and plates, these small additions make a big difference.
Opt for an updated corner cupboard
The good news is that to make the most of the cupboard, you don’t to rip it out and start again. A few small updates are all that it needs and when it comes to adding more storage, updating a corner cupboard opens up even more space and solution. With clever on the door shelving and carousel shelves too, the corner cupboard can become a storage hot spot.
Divide the space
We often assume that the best storage is open shelving, whether inside a cupboard or open on the wall. The problem is, all that space has no structure to it and when structure in storage is missing, it just leads to chaos. If you don’t fancy a run of baskets, divide the shelf with dividers to create smaller units for which you can store specific items. This doesn’t mean you have to cram everything in, however because ‘gaps’ every now and then gives the impression of order.
Storage can be difficult to get right but hopefully, with these ideas you will be able to keep storage chaos at bay!
