Creating an Office Nook
Working from home is something that more and more are choosing to do. On one hand, it is the ideal solution but on the other, it takes preparation as well as space. And then there are all kinds of distractions that you never knew existed…
Of course, working from home means creating an area to work from. It needs to suit the work that you do, whether that is mainly computer work or proofreading printed documents, to designing or operating as a call centre.
And that means creating an office. But here in lays a problem; you may not have the convenience of a ‘spare’ room which affords you the luxury of a designated home office.
The office nook may be the answer. But what is it and how does fitted furniture help?
What is an ‘office nook’?
Basically, it is the utilising of a small space to become a bijou home office. It works well, especially when designed around you, for when you work long hours at your desk or in short bursts.
Where is the best place for an office nook?
We have seen some fantastic examples of office nooks in corners of rooms or hallways, as well as in under the stairs. Anywhere, in fact where there is usable space that can be converted to a work station.
What needs to be considered when creating a small home office of this kind?
Clearly, working in a small space has both advantages and disadvantages;
- Lighting – you need to get the lighting right. This depends on where the nook is and the work that you do. When it comes to lighting, the best course of action is to have more than one choice. In other words, on darker days or evenings, you may need a brighter light but on other days, you may need less in terms of illumination. Make sure you are not working in shade or that there is glare on your PC screen.
- Bespoke desk solution – if you have an ‘awkward space’ to dress, the only real option is to have a bespoke work area and desk. Not only does this make your work area ergonomic, it also adds the stylish element to the space that you need.
- Bespoke storage solutions – built in your office nook should be the ideal storage solution for your office. Many people work paperless and so walls of filing cabinets are no longer needed. However, cloud computing can mean more technology, such as external hard drives, cabling and the like and that means your office nook needs to accommodate these and hide them away.
Now that you understand the principles of the office nook, has it now opened up a whole sea of possibilities?
