7 Storage Ideas for the Hallway
The hallway is a space that has to offer a lot of versatility and flexibility. In an effort to stop the clutter, we tend to keep the hallway plain and simple. Whilst this may work for some, when storage is lacking in the hallway, it impacts on other rooms in the home. No matter what size your hallway, you are sure to find a hallway storage solution that fits.
1. Hooks and bench and shelves
Think you can squeeze all three in? You can if you use all three to create a storage wall. Find a storage bench that fits the space (with internal or exterior shelving for shoes etc.) and opt for a shelf with hooks above. That’s basic storage of coats and shoes taken care of.
2. Hangers and boxes
We are used to using hangers in the wardrobe but turn them round to face you and you have a great storage solution for coats. Use sturdy, wall-mounted wooden boxes for bags and coats with a small rail attached to the underside and hang coats on hangers. Perfect no matter what size your hallway.
Pegboard is a useful material to have and when it comes to hallway storage, it is the ideal adjustable storage solution. From heavy coats in winter to lighter ones in spring and summer, a pegboard fixed securely to a portion of the hallway wall can be a great solution. Pegs easily fit in the holes and can be moved so children can reach their own coats, but also great for when your needs change.
4. Sliding doors
The space under the stairs is often underutilised but with such a narrow corridor in some hallways, doors that swing open can be problematic. And that means sliding doors are a great solution. The knack to fitted storage solutions in the hallway is making sure that it is flexible so don’t get too specific with the interior storage solutions.
5. Back of the door
This depends on your front door because if it is glazed, you want to keep as much of the light flooding into the hallway as possible but if you have an interior door, a coat rack on the back is a quick, inexpensive solution for the hallway.
6. Floor to ceiling
In a smaller hallway, you can’t be too prissy about using the whole of the floor to ceiling height you have available for storage. Fitted storage solutions are great for making full use of the height without it feeling towering or imposing. From over the head cupboard storage to coat rack at shoulder height and a handy bench for removing shoes and so on, this all-in-one storage solution is ideal.
7. The simplest solution – a storage bench
If nothing else, a bespoke storage bench is probably the easiest solution that can hide a myriad of shoes, boots and bags quickly and easily.
