5 Tips for a Festive Home
The festive season is on the doorstep and with less than 10 weeks to Hogmanay, our thoughts are turning to getting our home ready for the cheer that Christmas brings. But you don’t need a huge budget to get the look you want.
#1 Small touches bring the most in terms of festive cheer
We are accustomed to thinking of Christmas decorations as being flamboyant coloured baubles, bucketloads of glitter that gets everywhere, topped off with miles and miles of tinsel, the gaudier the better.
There is, of course, always a place for baubles, tinsel and the like but we are thinking of creating more of a festive backdrop, perfect for the outside of the decorated Christmas tree season.
We are thinking of warm coloured cushions with pretty snowflake designs, as well as plenty of throws and even a festive-looking rug or two. Bring in the winter with displays of holly and red berries too.
#2 Winter scent
If there is one thing you need to incorporate into your home it is the slight aroma of Christmas in the shape of red berries, cinnamon and other festive spices.
From a cluster of scented candles on your fitted living room furniture to the magic of diffusers and automatic scent misters, keep your winter accents all the same when it comes to scent otherwise, you will have a cacophony of competing perfumes.
#3 Table decorations
In fact, we think you could extend this beyond the dining table and have some pretty displays for a hallway windowsill and so on.
From piles of pine cones – just give them a little upgrade with a dab of glue and environmentally friendly glitter – and cluster them in bowls on the dining table, windowsills and so on.
You could also have a word with your friendly florist and have small wreaths made, perfect for when you have guests over for dinner in the lead up to the festive party season.
#4 Change your baking habits
With the darker nights and grey days once again upon us, what we eat tends to change and of course, with the festive season, so too do our baking habits.
Using typical festive spices – cinnamon and ginger spring to mind – in our baking, the home is filled with the aroma with Christmas…
#5 Invest in key pieces
If you have the storage facilities – like plastic boxes in the loft – you can afford to make an investment in key pieces that you bring out time and time again.
From limited edition festive pottery and ceramics to beautiful glass pieces, these items are almost like a signal to the family that the festive season is here.
Why not take a look at some local artisans for one-off pieces that are simply stunning and beautiful?
