5 Storage Ideas for the Home
Do you find that no matter how hard you try, there always seems to be something without its own place? There is a saying, ‘everything in its place’ but when you run out of space, how can you create more?
And when you have something rather awkward to store, how do you know where to put it? We have come up with 5 great storage ideas for the home…
#1 The Messy Kitchen Drawer
Not very scientific this one but we think that every home should have a drawer in which those small bits and bobs that are essential are kept. The spare shoe laces, the string, the paperclips, the magnets and so on.
However, if having a ‘messy’ drawer is not appealing then you can impose some order. Invest in some shallow wooden or plastic storage boxes – the type you see advertised as a huge bundle of storage boxes for very little. Cut a piece of newspaper the same size as the drawer and then arrange these small boxes in a delightful pattern within the space. Transfer the boxes in the set pattern to the drawer and then put your essential bits and bobs in the boxes.
#2 Use the space you have to its best ability
There may some parts of your home that are awkwardly shaped and thus, you think, fairly useless. But with the eye of a designer, the skills of a joiner and only a little cash, this space could be turned into a fabulous space for storage – anything from a miniature library to shoe rack and so on.
#3 Adjustable shelving
Who doesn’t love the look of neat shelves? No one but there can be one aspect that really annoys people – wasted space on the shelf. Or, even worse in some ways, the shelf not being tall enough between one level and another to fit something on.
Adjustable shelves are a must because as your storage needs change, you can change the shelves. Simple. Remember, storage is all about the space working as hard as possible for you.
#4 Zone your storage
Sometimes, we have a collection of things that are similar e.g. paper and stationery, electrical items like phone chargers and spare cables, present wrapping stuff and so on.
Creating zones so that these things can be kept together is a logical way of organising things and also helps keep the frustration levels of trying to find something to around 1 on the Richter scale. Anything from bamboo boxes to baskets is a great way or zoning a cupboard, shelving and so on.
#5 Look up
Your home may not be gargantuan but you may have height in the rooms. Why not invest in some delightful and stunning bespoke storage in the space? Having fitted storage from floor to ceiling makes it not only stylish but maximises the use of the space.
Just as important is that it is safe and so when you are reaching up for something, the structure will not come tumbling down on your head.
