5 Must-Do Summer Home Improvement Projects

Summer is the ideal time to do so many things. The weather is kinder and warmer, and we feel invigorated to get those home improvement projects underway. How will you be improving the kerb appeal of your home this season?

Scotland

#1 The roof repairs

Summer is the ideal time to get work done on the roof. Roofing material, especially slate, can be slippery no matter what the weather but roofing repairs or replacement is a safer option in the finer summer months.

  • Check the roof for signs of post-winter damage
  • Replace missing slates or repair obvious signs of damage
  • If replacing the roof, make this a summer project

#2 Bathroom upgrade

It’s the busiest room in the house which means that it can soon look worn, tired and jaded. The good news is, the answer isn’t always a bathroom replacement in full. If the ‘furniture’, that is the bath and shower cubicle, toilet and basin are in good shape, then consider the following easy bathroom do-up’s;

  • Replace the bathroom basin taps with designer-like taps
  • Change the toilet seat, perfect for giving a fresh look
  • Upgrade your towels and bathroom accessories

#3 Deal with the hallway

No one lingers for long in the hallway. The transient nature of the hallway means it can be last on our list to improve but this summer, make it the season you pay more than ‘just-a-little’ attention to this important space in your home;

  • Sort out hallway storage issues by opting for bespoke designed and tailor-made under-the-stairs cupboards or other storage solutions
  • Update the hallway floor opting for easy to clean hardwearing laminate or vinyl, or stain resistant hallway carpet (add a runner for an extra layer of colour and warmth)
  • Consider the hallway furniture carefully, adding a light for low-level, warm lighting for winter nights

#4 Landscape the garden

If the garden has lacked attention over the years or you need it to be something that is currently isn’t, spring and summer are both seasons that landscape gardeners can work their magic. Completion before autumn allows the garden to ‘bed-in’ over the winter months, blooming into action the following spring. To get the best from any garden re-design;

  • Consider how you use the garden now and how your use of it could change in the near future
  • Match the garden to the property, e.g. make it family friendly if it’s a family home
  • Don’t forget to include seating areas, a dining area, lighting and focal points in the design

#5 Smart thermostat

Many homeowners are realising the need for improved and better insulation but if you have all those boxes ticked, make summer the season you opt for a smart thermostat. Making controlling and using heat in your home more efficiently, a smart thermostat can;

  • Saves you money, sometimes shaving off as much as 20% off your annual heating bill
  • Be bought on a pay by month basis for the piece of equipment, so look for deals!
