Ergonomics and Commercial Office Furniture
On average, we spend 42 hours and 18 minutes a week at work. Many of us are still chasing the elusive work/life balance, even those workers who choose to work flexi-hours or work from home.
Spending hours at our desks daily is one thing but are we productive? Could we gain more by working fewer hours?
And what about workplace injuries or complaints about sore necks and shoulder, or lower back pain?
Ergonomics – why it really matters
Ergonomics is the study of people’s efficiency in the workplace. It has been determined that office design contributes to efficiency and productivity but also to worker well-being too, physical and emotional.
Ergonomic office furniture supports good posture, supports an employee physically as they carry out work tasks and also helps them to feel comfortable and happy at work.
But what does it mean in terms of design and choices? What are the key benefits?
#1 Reduces pain
We’ve all done it – sat for hours at a desk typing furiously to complete a report before the deadline only to find that to leave our desk, we need to ‘unfurl’ ourselves. And the nagging ache in the back didn’t go away for some days, neither did the twinge in the neck and shoulders either.
As well as being stationary for so long, lack of support from the office furniture contributes to these aches and pains.
A desk that is too low or too tall for someone or a non-adjustable office chair that offers little in the way of lumbar support…
The list could go on.
#2 Increases productivity
There are many reasons why productivity might suffer over the course of a working day. One reason is that if the office furniture or equipment is not supporting the person to complete tasks or allow people to collaborate easily, then it is not ergonomic.
With less physical problems to contend with, with commercial office furniture and design supporting the tasks that your staff do, you will find that productivity and well-being increase.
#3 Boosts morale
A pleasant office environment is not to be underestimated.
Wellness is not just about the physical but the emotional too. This doesn’t mean that a pretty desk and a comfy swivel desk chair solves all ills but it goes a long way to promoting emotional well-being whilst at work.
Why? The surroundings in which we work are important. If they know you value them, as well as provide them with the best tools and equipment for them to be able to do their jobs comfortably and safely, your staff will take more pleasure from being at work
